Chesterton Academy to Present Premiere of Play Based on the Life of Bl. Mary Theresa Ledochowska, Foundress of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (November 19, 2012) – Chesterton Academy is delighted to announce the premiere of Africanus, a play based on the life of Bl. Mary Theresa Ledochowska, the Foundress of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver. The juniors of Chesterton Academy will perform the play, directed by Laura Ahlquist.

Dale Ahlquist, president of the American Chesterton Society and co-founder of Chesterton Academy, wrote the play to commemorate the 150th birthday of Bl. Mary Theresa Ledochowska and the 75th anniversary of the religious community's presence in St. Paul. Four performances will run Thursday, December 6 through Saturday, December 8. Africanus tells the story of the remarkable life of Bl. Mary Theresa Ledochowska and her journey as countess and lady-in-waiting to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany to becoming the founder of a missionary order and "Mother of the Africans." For twenty-five years, the Foundress roamed Europe, enlisting people of all walks of life to support the cause of ending the slave trade in Africa and evangelizing the people of that continent. Today, the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver serves the missionary church around the world, with 42 houses in 23 countries, on 5 continents.
